A boy from nowhere lands in a world he does not know — and is given a Gift that turns a war.
Niko turns up in the Valley with no past anyone could find on a map, and with nothing but the Gift — an ability he does not yet understand himself. The world he lands in is about to stop being safe: dark clouds are gathering over lands that had managed to forget what war is.
Four volumes carry him from a defenceless newcomer surviving on his wits to the commander of an army fighting for the independence of Darmacia. Along the way there is a court and an assassination attempt, the siege of Hilden, the war carried onto the invader’s own ground, and a last battle in the Sugar Mountains, where six sorcerers wait on the other side with three Great Books of Magic.
The author’s training as a historian shows in the setting: this is fantasy built on the medieval mechanics of power, alliance and war rather than on magic alone.
